The reason death sticks so closely to life isn’t biological necessity, —it’s envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud.
Piscine Molitor Patel, Life of Pi, Yann Martel
Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
Albert Einstein
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
Haruki Murakami
Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.
How to Save Your Own Life
All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those who wander are lost;
the old that is strong does not wither,
deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring;
renenwed shall be blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be king.
J.R.R. Tolkien
When nothing else subsists from the past, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered—the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls bearing resiliently, on tiny and almost impalpable drops of their essence, the immense edifice of memory.
Marcel Proust, The Remembrance of Things Past
If we can forgive what’s been done to us, if we can forgive what we’ve done to others. If we can leave all of our stories behind, our being victims and villains - only then can we maybe rescue the world. But we still wait here, while we’re still victims, waiting to be saved. Waiting to be discovered while we suffer.
Chuck Palahniuk
And though the waves might bring you down and though the currents might pull you under, the sky is always still right above you.
I Wrote This For You
What does it matter that love is lost? Love is a song that trembles in the air and is caught by another. Love is a sweet melody that haunts those that like your singing. Let it go, and it will come again in another form. If you don’t let it go, it will never return, for a vessel that is full can never be filled. But a vessel that is empty can be filled with a rich new wine that you have never tasted before. And the new wine doesn’t destroy the memory of the old, but enriches your palate and your sense of having lived much. Unused palates don’t know good wine from bad.

Because he has been a major part of your life, of course you’ll miss him; it’s perfectly normal. It’s like getting a tooth pulled out ; after the dentist pulls it out you’re relieved. But how many times does your tongue run itself over the spot where the tooth once was? Probably a hundred times a day. Just because it was hurting you does not mean you don’t notice it. It leaves a gap, and sometimes you see yourself missing it terribly. It’s going to take awhile, but it takes time . Should you have kept the tooth? No, because it was causing you pain. Pulling the tooth was the right decision, but it’s going to hurt.
